On January 28th, at the approach of the Chinese New Year, a trial berthing was successfully completed at Kuwait’s Shuwaikh Port, marking a key milestone in the redevelopment of the port’s infrastructure.

REHABILITATION OF BERTH 1 TO 7 IN SHUWAIKH PORT FOR KUWAIT PORTS AUTHORITY plays an important role in Kuwait. It is owned by Kuwait Ports Authority and executed by HYUNDAI ENGINEERING & CONSTRUCTION CO.,LTD. /GULF DREDGING & GENERAL CONTRACTING Co. JOINT VENTURE(HDEC-GD JV).

To secure this project and expand our presence in the Kuwait market, JIER Marine made extensive efforts. We engaged in in-depth communication with the project owner and contractor to fully understand their requirements, conducted comprehensive background research, and consistently prioritized the client’s perspective in optimizing the overall berthing and mooring system design. We firmly believe that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for port berthing and mooring systems—only the most suitable design for each specific project. Ultimately, our approach earned the client’s trust. The solution includes: JCO1100H Super Cone Fender Systems, JDA300 and JDA500 Super Arch Fender Systems, JBH100 and JBH50 Stag Horn Bollards and JL Stainless steels for this project. All rubber fenders, mooring bollards and ladders showed excellent performance during the trial berthing.

All rubber material of the fenders for the project passed a series of tests conducted by the professional third party institution SGS,including:

  • Shore hardness

  • Heat aging test

  • 90°Peel Adhsion Strength

  • Abrasion Resistance

  • Ozone Aging

  • Tensile Test

  • Compression Set

  • Tear Strength

  • Density

  • Compositional Analysis by Thermogravimetry

  • Dynamic Fatigue Test

All tests were performed according to ASTM standards. The results confirmed that the Super Cone Fenders and Super Arch Fenders exhibit outstanding performance, with strong resistance to oil, ozone, and other harsh marine environmental conditions.

Additionally, the super cone fenders and arch fenders were compressed in compliance with PIANC guidelines. Their reaction force and absorption energy comply with the project requirements. During the trial berthing, the marine rubber fenders absorbed the energy generated by the vessel’s mooring impact, thereby protecting the dock structure.

The bollards were subjected to the pull load test with 1.5 times the safe working load. The smooth surface condition after the test proved that the bollards meet the safety load requirements. This type of mooring bollard can also withstand the forces from various directions.

The stainless steel ladders were designed and manufactured as per the technical specifications using SS316L material, which offers high corrosion resistance in marine environment. Rubber Fenders and Ladders are always used as a system as the ladder is very helpful for port personnel to install and maintain the rubber fenders.

The successful trial berthing demonstrates the reliability of JIER Marine’s equipment in supporting the operation of Shuwaikh Port.
